INTERNATIONAL DIRECTOR'S VISIT
The Lions club year follows the school year, so we are starting a new season after the summer break.
We started with a visit from our International Director and good friend Luis Dominguez Calderon. Our president Anna received the International President's Certificate of appreciation in recognition of her long and dedicated service to Lions and the community. Congratulations Anna! Our secretary received the coveted International President's pin.
ANNUAL FRIENDSHIP MEETING
Next on the program this autumn was our annual international meeting. Regrettably our Finnish friendship club was not represented this year. It was a mostly Norwegian event with LC Lørenskog Vest and LC Lørenskog-Fjellhamar visiting, our regular guests at this time of year.
It was lovely to see them again and we invited ladies club Lørenskog Fjellhamar to be our friendship club. They are a large and active club and we have shared a useful exchange of information and ideas the last three years.
We were delighted to have Svenn Erik Rise, the new headmaster of the local Norwegian school, as our guest. We have had a good relationship with the school in the past and hope this may be even better in the future.
We participated in a Breast Cancer Awareness event raising around 400 euros for this worthy cause. We all had lots of fun and this will hopefully become an annual event. As you will see from the photos it was a very pink event, we wore pink t-shirts and ribbons and carried pink balloons.
We were joined by Elin from LC Tønsberg Slottsfjellet, Norway, a former member of our club.
Lovely to see you again Elin!
Thanks to a series of fundraising activities and some major donations during winter 2008-09 we built up a fund to cover the leaner summer months. Thus we have been able to provide Caritas with 1000 Euros per month for the purchase of 10 euro food vouchers for the needy. Caritas have monthly coordination meetings with Social Services.
We have also been augmenting the dry goods provided by Banco de Alimentos and the food donations received through the Asociation de Vecinos with fresh produce, thus aiding the Asociacion de Vecinos project. The Banco de Alimentos also have stringent criteria for food recipients.
We will be helping disadvantaged families with school meals and we continue to support the Day Care Center.
We have an activity planned for Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, more information shortly!
A good friend recently organised a concert in the Anglican Church in Las Palmas to raise funds for Childrens' Charities "at home and abroad". She kindly donated 300 euros to the Day Care Center we support, as well as an orphanage in China and a donation to children with cancer. A few weeks later we heard that a Lions Club in Las Palmas was also helping children with cancer. So we donated 200 euros to finance a holiday for a child from our area.
What goes around comes around; we enjoy cooperating with others to reach a common goal.

We have been invited by the Social Services Department of the local Council to help out with an excellent project.
The Day Care Centre provides a safe and socially educative milieu for children of struggling parents; single parents working shifts, and families with reduced parenting skills and resources.
The children, aged four to fourteen, are provided with an afternoon snack. This gives them important social training as well as nutrition. By donating the cost of this meal we are giving food and support to these children and their families.
We hope to be able to arrange some outings for them and to provide additional books and school materials.
Cruz Roja are providing the transport for the children, so this is a fine example of how humanitarian organizations and local authorities can work together for the common good.

We have had a lot of publicity from local newspapers and radio stations, we have been holding talks to local organisations and we now have a really good dialog with the local Council and social services.
We received a donation of 1274 euros from Turistkyrkan in Puerto Rico and a further 1075 euros from Los Amigos. A friend dropped by with 240 euros, others gave the contents of an apartment they were refurbishing.
The response we are getting is amazing. We are helping the really needy, and we are seeing results.
A touching example is an elderly man on a minimum pension of 328 euros. He cannot read or write and is a little distré and disorientented. I met him at the first meeting at the end of November, when he was about to be evicted ( his rent is 400 euros) and he was confused and undernourished.
Our volunteer advisers helped him negotiate with his landlord and we made sure he had enough to eat. He is now a cheerful regular helper at our secondhand market, and I have seen him wielding a mop in our distribution point. He loves the wholemeal bread donated by the Norwegian Bakery, and gets quite upset if we haven't had a delivery!
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, this old man no longer worries where his next meal is coming from, and he now brings all his post to his adviser, avoiding future problems.
He is one of a few whose situations are not solvable, he will continue to be dependent on outside help, but now enjoys considerably better quality of life.

We are collecting food for local people in need. There are now 220 000 people unemployed in the Canary Islands, and our list of needy people is growing.
We are currently helping 26 local families, about 70 people. They are homeless, pensioners, single mothers and jobless with large families.
Several local businesses and organisations are now helping this project.
The latest additions to our supporters are The Womens' International Network, WIN. Great to have you along, girls!
In just over 3 months we have received countless bags of groceries and donations of around 9000 euros. The Lions Annual Charity Concert brought in over 3000 euros, so we have now raised a magnificent 12 000 euros!

Members spend a pleasant evening packing donated toys.

We gave donated secondhand toys in good condition to children of needy families. I have never seen children so happy to receive so little.

Due to the recent rain the almond trees flowered early and the north of the island is very green. The fire-damaged pine trees are recovering and little streams and waterfalls could be seen in the mountains. Beautiful!
